AIHE’s Social Studies Academy™ — One-day seminars coming to a city near you!

Nationally recognized social studies methods specialists Anthony Fitzpatrick, Fran Macko and Robby Brown will share their wealth of classroom-tested strategies and ideas for engaging students and allowing them to actively explore historical content. Teachers will walk away from the seminar with the ability to use these methods in their classrooms the very next day!

These workshops are designed for history and social studies teachers in grades K-12 who are looking for fun and exciting ways to bring rich, historical content into their classrooms. The strategies presented are designed for infusion into United States, World, Government, and Social Studies classes.

Spend a week with the AIHE faculty and engage in substantive professional development for your history classrooms by top-notch history education specialists.  Our staff will present innovative teaching methods and activities designed to increase historical thinking skills among your students and enliven your classrooms.  Each day will be full of participant-centered activities closely matched with substantive historical content.  You'll also spend a day in Historic Philadelphia walking in the footsteps of the founders while learning how to bring history beyond the textbook for your students.  At the end of the week, each participant will develop a turnkey plan so that they can share what they've learned with their districts so that these programs can be shared and sustained.

Participating in the Alexander Hamilton Grant with AIHE has been a very rewarding experience shared by all involved in Paterson Public Schools. It has been a fun and exciting way to obtain new knowledge and breathe new life into our classrooms. While learning new historical content, we also get to know one another throughout the district, which is such an added resource. Through sharing ideas and collaborating lesson plans the veteran teacher in motivated to incorporate new scholarship while the novice teacher lays a rock solid foundation. We have met authors who have used props, seen history come to life by actually meeting actors who became George Washington and Henry “Box” Brown. We have been captivated by the lectures of renowned historians and studied history through music. The field trips to New York and New Jersey Historical Societies were exhilarating. We are all anxiously anticipating May’s Field Trip to Gettysburg. The resources we receive make us feel there are a number of ways to bring history alive. Through use of Binary Paideia we have the opportunity to present history as significantly important to our students. We are outstandingly grateful for this rewarding experience and greatly look forward to our upcoming colloquiums.
