America's History Logo

America’s History Manuscripts

An ongoing effort to compile and present manuscripts in the history of American politics and government, Americas history is the sole site devoted to documenting the manuscripts not only of the presidents and vice presidents, but their cabinet members and the unsuccessful candidates to the position, as well as other categories.  An effort has been made to find significant historical pieces from every era of American history that themselves played a role in the American political dialogue.

It is a work in progress.  What does this mean? Just as American history continues, as new manuscripts are found and others created, so will this site change to reflect continuous additions, incorporate further categories of American notables and educate the historian and educator to a great extent.

Many of the great collections have been compiled out of love for the piece and dedication to its discovery.  The intent at America’s History is to make this information available for the public education and enjoyment and to pass on that love to the student and the enthusiast.

America's History is a private effort from an historically passionate collector and is curated by The Raab Collection. www.americashistory.org

American Civil War Society

The American Civil War Society (ACWS) is dedicated to the historical period known as "The War Between the States". This war has remained the bloodiest conflict in American's history pitting brethren against brethren. The war is probably the most complex and socially controversial ever in our country's history. The very issue of the meaning of the Declaration of Independence was clear and precise in 1776, but when the Southern states exercised their rights as described in that declaration, the United States government said, "The Union must and shall be preserved!" Each person had to declare for themselves what best fit their ideology. There was no foreign powers attacking our country, thus causing a single united front of concern. The issue was clearly State Rights and what was the meaning of our forefathers' Declaration of Independence to hold for future generations if secession was not allowed.

ACWS is re-enactors portraying these vulnerable pages in our country's history. We continue to educate the public through as many diversified perspectives as were the issues back in 1861 - 1865. We the re-enactors have researched and developed period correct uniforms, weapons, civilian attire, and living history encampments to portray some of the conditions back in that period of our countries archives.

The ACWS is active throughout San Bernardino, Orange, Los Angeles, and San Diego Counties. Our historical presentations are recognized by several County Regional Park Departments and our Living History Insurance liability exceeds the Counties requirements. In addition to the re-enactments that are done on specified weekends, the Society has provided programs for private organizations, schools, parades, ceremonial presentations, and commemorative celebrations as an educational tool to better share living history with the general public.

Cold War MuseumCold War Museum Button

From the 1940s until the 1990s the rivalry between the democratic Free World and the nations of the Communist bloc affected Americans' daily lives and events throughout the world. This "Cold War" actually became a "hot" one in Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War but generally took the form of espionage and diplomatic maneuvers, with the United States, the Soviet Union and China as the major combatants. The Cold War Museum seeks to memorialize the people and events of those years and educate future generations about that era.

Foreign Policy Research Institute

Founded in 1955, FPRI is devoted to bringing the insights of scholarship to bear on the development of policies that advance U.S. national interests. We add perspective to events by fitting them into the larger historical and cultural context of international politics.

The scholars of FPRI include a former aide to three U.S. secretaries of state, a Pulitzer Prize-winning historian, a former president of Swarthmore College and a Bancroft Prize-winning historian, and two former staff members of the National Security Council.

We count among our trustees a former Secretary of State and a former Secretary of the Navy (and among our former trustees and interns two current Undersecretaries of Defense), not to mention two university presidents emeritus, a foundation president, and several active or retired corporate CEOs. And we count among our extended network of scholars — especially, our Inter-University Study Groups — representatives of diverse disciplines, including political science, history, economics, law, management, religion, sociology, and psychology.

Heroes 4 Us

Inspirational, motivating, dynamic, powerful, humorous, creative, captivating! These are all words that have been used by teachers, book reviewers, parents, and conference attendees who have attended one of my speaking engagements. After being frustrated by the pop culture icons and the super-rich athletes who are displayed as heroes by our society, I have spent much of my life learning about true heroes and sharing their stories with other educators.

"Children need to see that they can achieve just like real heroes — they can make mistakes, learn from them, keep striving, and eventually succeed. I CAN is a powerful message that REAL heroes can teach." — Dr. Dennis Denenberg

Mount Vernon LogoGeorge Washington's Mount Vernon Estate & Gardens

When George Washington lived here, Mount Vernon was an 8,000-acre plantation divided into five farms. Each farm was a complete unit, with its own overseers, work force of slaves, livestock, equipment, and buildings. The farm where Washington and his family lived was called the "Mansion House Farm." This is the part of the plantation that visitors see today. Washington developed the property's 500 acres to create a fitting setting for a country gentleman. He designed the grounds to include a deep border of woods, rolling meadows, serpentine walkways, a pleasure garden, a kitchen garden, and groves of trees. Between the Mansion and the shores of the Potomac River lay an extensive park.

As nearly as possible, Mount Vernon was a self-contained community. Nothing was purchased that could be produced on site. Yet the Mansion House Farm was so well designed that the service lanes did not intrude upon the area reserved for the enjoyment of Washington, his family, and their many guests. From the Potomac River on the east to the Estate's west gate entrance ran the pleasure grounds and wide vistas; along the north-south line were the outbuildings, or dependencies, where much of the work was done.
